The birdlike mask was actually a primitive gas mask due to misconceptions about the plague being spread by smell; the beak was filled with plants meant to cleanse the air. With modern knowledge and technological improvements, we instead get tight-to-the-face masks that aren’t nearly as visually interesting.
The coat was based the same way as modern techniques with the materials of the time: full obscuration of the body prevented contamination. Unfortunately, the plague came before the realization of cleanliness = health, so the outfits were rarely washed. It’s easier to tell when a bright ensemble is dirty… but also looks a lot less pleasant on the eyes.
Sacrifice fashion for function, and the whole world calls you lame. People still insult Crocs for no reason.
Eh, I dunno, AIM in Marvel comics it’s rocking hazmats… Ok, the goons are kind of a joke. The trick to making hazmat guys look intimidating is make a barely there yet visible skull shape behind the visor. Also works for astronauts.
Then again when everyone is wearing a hazmat suit and you’re not that’s unnerving in itself.

Oh, I’m sure they have a reason. 🙂
Technically, “I enjoy being a jerk” does qualify as a reason.

I invite you to the Explodatorium some time.
I feel as though I’ve lost nerd points for seeing the second panel and not immediately thinking of shovel knight…
The old doctors look like they are cosplaying Spy vs Spy.
My research says it was more a 14th-century thing.
Dang! All four panels are hilarious today.
…and “Latex-covered Twinkies” is even funnier when it comes right after Simon Belmont’s epic pose!
The eyebrows on the mask are a nice touch.
