Slim Pickins at the Buddy Buffet
Before you comment , read this:
Some alert readers pointed out that the original version of the comic was off on the math. The narrator in panel 2 said “Now let’s remove all the folks you’ll never meet.” which does indeed conflict with panel 4. I had rewritten these panels to death and my notebook was a garbled mess of alternate lines of dialogue, which made it easy for that erroneous piece of text to slip right in.
I have since gone back and replaced the narration with something that mathematically makes a bit more sense. So don’t be confused when you scroll down and see the earlier comments questioning the logic of this particular comic.
Thanks again to all the alert readers out there!
Another good one! Have you ever thought about doing one with no dialogue other than the narraration boxes?
Hang on. Shouldn't the people who will die before you meet them in panel four already have been filtered out in panel two?
No, because it says that those people are from places he'd never visit. What if he'd visited a place but he'd never met the people that would have liked him there 'cause they died? 😉
The 4th panel doesn't make sense because you've already removed the people you'll never meet in panel 2 🙁
You're absolutely right. This is an example of doing far too many rewrites. Originally, panel 2 was going to be "Remove all the people from places you'll never visit". I later went back and changed it but didn't take into account how this conflicted with panel 4 – plus I was rewriting every panel and trying to think of how best to represent the world's population slowly dwindling (a column? a row of dots? a globe? etc) so I got a little distracted and this strip got away from me.
I'll go back in a replace panel 2 with its original narration. Good catch by the way.
Happens to the best of us! I sometimes enitrely rewrite my comics as I'm drawing them, and sometimes it really doesn't even makes sense anymore
Thanks, man. Glad I'm not alone.
Keep up the amazing work!
It wouldn't be nearly as funny that way! Loving the shrinking column. Now I have an excuse as to my lack of friends! 😀
And here I thought my lack of friends was due to my desire to occassionally push them off cliffs.
Hate to be that guy, but the math is wrong — if you start off removing all the folks you never meet, the subsequent categories are from that same already-removed pool, so the column wouldn't shrink further.
Then again, with Bug, panel 3 could be "the people who you've met and simply hate your guts" and panel 4 could be "the people who might actually like you if you'd simply change everything about yourself"…
Of course, the "people that die before you meet them" belong in the "people you'll never meet" category. But then there is still "people YOU don't like", the people that "you like a bit too much, and they only like you as a friend", the people that "you like, and who obviously liked you, but the alcohol and weed in your system didn't think it was necessary to remember any contact information, or even a name".
How can you substract the people who die before you meet them from the people you will meet. Does that mean they come back as zombies to meet you?
Most of my friends DO have weird-smelling elbows, now that you mention it!
I resemble that remark!
Now divide what's left in half and pick only one. That's your girlfriend.
Well, I feel for the guy. My knees smell strange from all the praying I do to find some friends
It's amazing to think sometimes how people can drift in and out of your life, and how weird facebook has changed all that.
Friends with smelly elbows are the best anyways. SO THAR! <3
I completely missed the panel-contradiction, but this still made me laugh out loud.
At work.
awesome one my friend! Oh wait. You might live in one of those places I'll never visit. Now I'm confused.
Would love to see a gag like this from a lady's perspective.
Done and done. Click here to check it out.
Do you do girl versions of all your comics?
Aww, nerd girl bug needs to get out more! She could make more appearances… that might help her meet more people, but it probably wouldn't help her boobs smell better.
A girl nerd bug! Gotta love it 🙂
The link seems to be broken. Can you reupload the picture?
I have always questioned the structural integrity of the roofs at the comic cons.
I am so happy you've been plugged by Explosm! finally. This is the funnest daily comic I go across.
I came here just like you, they said "You won't regret it." and I haven't at all. 😛
agreed. :l
You know, it says a lot that I've been reading every day for months now, and enjoying th comic greatly, but the first time I comment is to complain about a mistake. Sorry about that.
So.
Great comic, keep it up, and keep making me laugh. My four year old stepson to be loves it too, even though he can't really read yet, he loves the pictures.
