Yep, I’ve always thought they were stupid. Those parties are just another way to reinforce gender roles and expectations that overwhelmingly disadvantage anyone who is not born male.
To add to their useless nature, let’s not forget that mostly, their real purpose is simply to make the parents feel important, forcing others to drop everything to attend this oh-so-important event.
That is the biggest load of bullshit I’ve ever heard. Announcing the gender of a baby in an extravagant manner does nothing to disadvantage a female child. Yes, it makes a needless spectacle out of a relatively mundane matter, but that happens regardless of the child’s gender. Accusing a party of somehow lessening the ability of a baby girl to do anything later in life is absolute nonsense.
It reinforces the idea that the gender is important and fixed at birth. On it’s own it might not do much, but it all adds up.
Not to mention that it was “disadvantage anyone who is not born male”, not “disadvantage a female child”. There is a difference and the fact that you got that wrong kinda proves the original point.
Pretty much the only thing gender reveals are good for is viral videos, wherein either the reveal goes horribly wrong, or a child cries because they wanted a sister instead of a brother (or vice versa).
I may be (a little) cynical, but to me, it looks like some parents just fount another occasion to surf on their baby’s cuteness and be the center of attention, then other parents wanted in on it.
Or party-loving parents just wanted another reason to host a party.
Anyway, it doesn’t seem to be a global thing… yet.
I’m as cynical as dr. Istvaan. …who’s giving me flashbacks to magic cards of 35+ years ago.
Anyway first time I heard of a gender reveal party was with my 7th nibling, and it was totally nothing but my sister drjanding an extra day of attention because she wasn’t the center of attention enough anymore. 🙄

Are gender reveal parties a recent thing? I never heard of them until a few years ago, but then started seeing constant mentions of them online.
Wonder if they grown in popularity recently, or I just had a social blind spot.
And put me in the “Don’t understand why this is a thing” camp too.

Demanding. Not even sure I can blame automangle for that one. >_>
“Automangle” sounds like a Fazbear attraction.
I meant 25+ oops.

One of these just started a major fire
the contraption maimed the entire state of california this time
Coincidentally, CNN recently published this article on Gender-Reveal parties:

It also reveals why some people have a negative view of them. Interesting read, and quite fitting for this cartoon.
