Assault and Battery
Okay, feel like I’m getting the hang of this thing. I used a fancier brush in Photoshop. There’s a calligraphy type pen that is really calling out to the artsy-fartsy side of me. I might try some sketches with that one first.
Also – the brush I used for the lettering is one size smaller from the one used yesterday. What do you think? Too thin?
I love LeiaBug. And the fact that HanBug has no pants on.
The lettering is a bit thin, but I could get used to it, especially since it should allow for longer text when necessary.
I prefer the thinner lettering. And both Han- and Leia-bug are awesome.
My favourite part of this strip?
*pew pew* 😀
And I think the comic currently looks smashing, thinner lettering and all.
Another vote for thinner lettering. Yesterday’s was too thick, this is just right.
And once again I’m amazed at how Adam can squeeze caricature out of what’s essentially a black rectangle and two white ovals.
Lettering looks great. Looks just about as good as the original scanned version.
That’s what I thought.
Come to think of it, lightsabers don’t seem to run out of juice either.
The lettering looks fine to me, as long as I can still read Bugspeak!
Funny enough, a number of Star Wars Extended Universe novels feature either the requirement to change power cells or to use the power source in a lightsaber for something, also addressing the need to change it. I guess authors think about such things more than screenwriters do^^
When the storm troopers are approaching the Millennium Falcon on the Death Star in ANH, voice over audio is heard where the commander orders, “Load your weapons, men.” I’d assume those are the power packs he’s talking about.
I dunno. Ben Kenobi’s lightsaber seemed to fade at one point while dueling with Darth Vader in Star Wars. You guys know what scene I’m talking about?
Yeah, but I always attributed it to his “Force” being battered down. In my mind, the lightsabers took their power from the Force of the wielder. Batteries or power cells didn’t even occur to me.
nah, people that are not Jedi or Sith can use the lightsabers, so they do require batteries.
I think the idea is that they don’t drain much power when on (iirc, they’re a magnetically looped plasma field?), but drain more when in resistance to something. This was mentioned in the extended universe, especially the games I think, that the old lightsabers required belts that had powerpacks, but the new ones returned the power to the cell until cutting or hitting something resistant.
The blasters use power packs and gas, most of what is shot out it super heated and accelerated gas, hence it’s slowness. Of course, this is probably all retcon once people started realizing lasers should be light speed and unblockable 😛
That was a technical effects glitch. What you actually see there is a brief glimpse of the reflective tube they were using as a prop sword. Later, during processing, the light saber glow was to be painted in. For some reason, either because they just missed it or because it caused interference with the rest of the film at that particular point, they never painted that in. Later, they added a sound effect to imply the lightsaber had powered down.
Yep, saw the original, Han-Shot-First, StarWars, in the theater 37 times.
This reminded me of this:
How Big Is C-3PO’s Battery?
Yeah, cuz size really does matter 8^}
The lettering is perfect is you ask me. And it’s hilarious by the way :-D. (The comic, not the lettering).
I disagree. The best piece of technology from science fiction movies is still the flasher from Men in Black. So much missing this. Plus it is a piece of technology that (still) is substantially new. Everything else is just a better version of what we have today – faster drives, better computers, refined laser weapons, longer lasting batteries… everything fine and much needed (except the weapons), but not very inventive. Not science fiction but just a progression from today’s tech.
Well, antigrav units would be another new thing. Or beaming. Ok, there are some new thingies.
P.S.: The thinner lettering is better.
HI .. no I like the thin letters!
And I really love the bug-version of Princess Leia!!! xD
Today’s lettering is just right. And I agree about the batteries — it’s 2013, and I still have to spend 5 minutes every evening just to check that my son’s toys are all switched off (those things will eat through a 70-cells pack in like a week if I just let them stay on). Time for plutonium AA cells, yessir! 😛
Had to look at other Bug comics to see the difference in lettering. Looks fine to me. Only a slight difference in line width.
R2-D2 takes the same batteries as a remote control? Must be some powerful remote control or a really energy-efficient droid! Or, maybe Artoo takes a whole lotta AAA’s.
I liked how never-ending magazines were explained in Mass Effect. Basically it amounted to the “mass effect”.
I think I prefer the thinner lettering. But to be fair, I wouldn’t have even noticed a difference if you hadn’t pointed it out.
Did you ever think of joining with Matt and doing some animation of this?
Nah. Matt has is own project he’s working on that I’m more excited about.
I may be getting old and curmudgeonly, but I prefer the thicker lettering – it’s easier on the eyes, and I don’t have to hold my head at weird angles to see through the bifocal part of my specs. 🙂
I got a pair of “computer glasses” with the whole lens made like the lower part of my bifocals. It’s worth it not to break my neck tilting back all the time.
I like the thinner lettering. Makes the emphasized words stand out more. Also, the strip looks fantastic in general.
I also like the thinner lettering. I’m not really adding much value to the conversation.
Ka-POW!
I liked yesterday’s comic and I liked today’s. Whatever works for you, works for me!
Another vote for the thin lettering. Though your pointing it out definitely helped me notice it.
As someone above mentioned, I wouldn’t have noticed the difference if it hadn’t been pointed out. But since you mention it, it makes the lettering in the longer sentences appear more clearly. Bug remains as totally awesome as ever!
In fairness, one of the Star Wars Rogue Squadron has a mission that’s basically about getting more juice for the Rebels’ blasters.
I bet R2D2 plugs into a wall socket to charge when he’s offscreen.
Also, I’ve hit “random” a few times, and today’s lettering looks much like the lettering you’ve had before. The thicker lettering looks worse.
The bugs today look larger than usual, though, with less white space around them, and more rounded heads?
You really need to stop using that pad. Seriously, the strip is so good looking I can’t even concentrate on reading the damn thing. :/
R2D2 would totally take lik 4 D cells, which would make you hate him every time you had to find a store that still sells them.
This is much better than yesterday! I’m amazed, it looks almost as good as your scanned pages! And after only two comics to practice it too! I like the thinner lettering, as most others seem to, as well. And ofc, you always make me laugh– my morning wouldnt be complete without some bug antics, and always a bonus when there’s a Star Wars reference! 😀
Thanks! Hopefully it’ll just get better from here.
Hello, my name is Jeff, and I…(sob)…I…(choke)…I ROLL MY BATTERIES TO GET EXTRA LIFE OUT OF THEM!!!
Hi, Jeff.
AHahahha I love p.2! 😀 I feel like this sometimes when I play long video game fight sequences. “Why AM I killing these things?!”
Comic looks great again today Adam, you were right I can tell it’s thinner but it isn’t invisible and I think I saw someone say you could squeeze in a tad more text when needed at that level.
Art is fabulous, Han Solo bug ftw!
In the original Star Trek episode “The Omega Glory,” the one with the US flag, the old captain had used up his phaser’s battery killing natives before Kirk arrived.
I honestly did not notice the difference yesterday until I read the text below and even then I had to do a side by side comparison with Friday’s strip. I like the thinner lettering because you usually use thicker ones for emphasis so yesterday read as if Bug was very hyper. Otherwise, it’s all the same to me.
Cuba Gooding Jr might be in one of the new Star Wars movie. I’d luck to see a sequel to Krull. They ruled the planet and there son would rule the universe but they never said that worked out well for the rest of the universe. Just sayin
I’m surprised nobody’s mentioned this yet, but in one episode of Firefly a guy’s energy weapon actually does run out of juice.
