Catch Twenty Poo: Number Two
Well, it was bound to happen – I finally repeated myself.
I got this strip all finished last night and came up with a title: “My Can Poo Attitude.” I wondered if I had used that title before so I searched my archives for the word “poo.” That’s when I stumbled across this oldie (click on it to see it full sized):
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It’s like the same damn strip! Same dilemma, same sparkly toilet in panel one, same backed-up bug in panel four, there’s even a bug wearing a bikini in both! I truly forgot that I had done this joke before. I considered not posting this strip at all – which would mean no strip period since I had no time to write and draw something else – but I figured you guys would get a kick out of seeing me trip over my lousy memory.
I recalled the strip from 4 years ago as soon as I read the first panel, but this strip still got a laugh, especially the “alternate facilities” 😀
I think this version of the joke is even better than the first one and it’s really interesting what changed in all those years.
I like it!
Yeah, I like this version better. At least I’m improving. Just wait till I accidentally draw this strip again in another five years! It should be even more hilarious.
…AND, probably, in 3D!
It’s not being forgetful, it’s just a Hollywood style re-boot!
It’s actually pretty funny that you redid the comic but with the humor under a different light!
I like the newer one better! 🙂
Didn’t think it was possible, but I’m an even bigger fan now. And you must be delighted to know you can replay your old material and we’ll gobble it up!
And after you’ve gobbled it up, if you’ve cleaned your toilet recently, you’ll have the pleasure of holding onto it for a good long while. Huttifying.
And now I’m an even bigger fan of my sister
Also, this tells us you clean your toilet every 4 years.
Ha-ha!
Most major “joke a day” comic strips I’ve read have done this one time or the other, sometimes deliberately and on more than one occasion. Strips that come to mind to have done this include Garfield and Hagar the Horrible. I’ve even seen strips where they took an old 3-panel joke and stretched it into a full page because hey, I guess they needed the material for the Sunday paper and who remembers old strips anyways.
So don’t feel too bad, besides your comic is way better than the others anyways 😀
Wait – Garfield has more than one joke? What’s the other one?
Garfield: Mondays, Jon is pathetic, Odie is dumb, overeating cat, friends with mice, mortal enemies with spiders. Did I miss any? You’ve still got way more variety Adam.
Wait, there was a first joke?
I miss Lyman.
Thanks! I remember Dave Kellett (who draws the always enjoyable Sheldon http://www.sheldoncomics.com/) once posted a link, showing that Charles Schulz did this once. So at least I’m in good company.
Watterson once did a repeat, too (of Calvin batting solo and tagging himself out).
Honestly, I read this every day and I’m not sure what I would do with out it. Even with old material, I loved today’s strip. Especially the third panel, the newspaper is great.
Well, congrats!
Don’t worry, as long as there will be a twist you can repeat yourself.
It’s actually really great to see your different approaches to the same concept over time! Both are pretty funny, but the sink-squat really kills it! Ha!
…though it’s depressing to know if you stayed backed up that long…this would happen
Where time becomes a loop, becomes a loop, becomes a loop….
“All hands, abandon ship! I repeat, all hands…” [kablooey]
“Captain’s log, stardate…”
Has it been over two years since you last cleaned your toilet to inspire this sentiment again?
The grace period expired. LOL. No, really, actually laughing out loud.
Also, the “alternate facilities” panel is golden. Good thing you didn’t let this comic go to, um, waste.
I have a question (p.s. I had forgotten the first one like you did. Must be old (me, not you)): Why don’t you “stockpile” strips like, on the weekend or something so you aren’t always “under the gun” every single day after work?
I’m not complaining in any way, I’m just curious. You know me, man. LOVE this strip. Best one since Calvin & Hobbes went away.
I can’t seem to work without deadline pressure. Plus I work a day job, so my between that and this I have very little free time.
I didn’t remember the previous one, and I love both. In fact, I feel like it’s bonus day… two Bug strips today instead of one!
Why do you guys keep on saying it was 4 years? It was only 2 years!
You know, honestly, in a couple/few years, I’m not going to remember a repeat comic. There are some people with amazing memories but I’d like to think mine is pretty average. I do love the fact that you pointed it out though. Made the comic even funnier.
Besides, reboots are all the rage. It even looks like your actors are younger this time round, just like in Star Trek and the rest.
Just as long as he doesn’t draw: Bug Martini – Now With Extra Lens Flare!
I’ve done this with blog posting. I wrote a post only to realize (after publishing) that I had written about the same thing once or twice before. So I decided to write a post about repeating myself… only to find out that I wrote that post before too!
Awesome! Thats so weird, I love it!
In four years, you’ve picked up many new readers. (While I’ve been reading for quite a while, I doubt its four years.) So unless they were totally obsessed and read the entire archive, they’ve never seen this before. Everything old is new again, etc.
My only question is why you don’t have a Patreon or a store yet. Why won’t you let me give you my money?!
There’s one reward for Patreon subscribers that I’m trying to figure out how to do (watch me draw live). Once that’s settled, my Patreon will be a go.
Panel 3 was worth the repeat.
It’s ok if this is the same concept. You told new jokes, and I think you’ve gotten better with expressions, making this one funner to read.
If it makes you feel any better, Wiley Miller (Non Sequitur) is redoing some of his older strips, but if I wasn’t a long time reader, I wouldn’t have noticed, since they’re still good. You’re up there with the greats, don’t worry!
Deja-Poo, right guys? Am I right? I’m right.
I remember that Patreon comic when Bug said “Wait,I thought we were doing the toilet joke again.” At the time, I thought it wasn’t really a reference to anything-just something that he said.
