For The Haters
When I initially wrote this strip, I thought that some folks wouldn’t see that it was a poem. In order to show readers that they needed to pause at the end of every line (as you would if you were reading a poem aloud) I ended each line with a comma. I thought this would clear up any confusion.
Well, it had the opposite effect, and it ended up detracting from the strip as it seems that’s all anyone talked about. So I’ve decided to remove some of the commas. I have sent them to a nice farm up north, where they can run and play with semi-colons and parentheses.
lol I love the last panel
<4.
(it's like "<3", but it's got one more.)
this comic is one of the stupidest things i have ever wasted 5 seconds on (plus the time it took to make this comment)
the art is terabad its even in black and white
it only comes out 5 days a week
the 2nd and 3rd panels are funny deifying how comics have always been done
and so many more thing i could say but i just dont have the words/time to complain about
I disagree you're wrong in every sense that you can be wrong. Your comment wasted 3kb of my internet cache. Also commenting about black and white in black type is horrible. This comment wasn't even first and the spacing of the paragraphs were horrible. And replying to my comment would just prove how wrong you are about everything.
Your reply is black and white too (or well black and green).
I cant hear you over the sound of how wrong you are.
I can't believe you guys are still using words… Everyone knows words are DEAD! Long live anti-words! They eat words and extrude pure thought! I'm not even typing. It's my thoughts being processessed through my fingers. Get with the program.
I love you, have all my childrens.
you must be getting ready for Christmas season.
I’m going to assume you were trolling due to the message of the above comic (haters need to go away… hey, I think I’ll pretend to hate this!) instead of losing my temper with your inability to appreciate an awesome comic.
A+ if, and only if, this is satirical. Otherwise, you just scored a G-
Okay, I know how ironic this is going to sound, but your grammar is absolutely horrifying. I could tolerate it when it was just a minor inconvenience, but when I first read this comic (and several other times thereafter), I was honestly struggling to comprehend it.
You don't seem to understand how syllables contribute to a rhyme scheme, either, but I'll let that slide because you were awesome enough to even *attempt* rhyming.
Seriously, though. This is one of the most amazing webcomics I've ever seen, and I just really wish I could read it properly. Please go back to elementary school and pass the third grade.
Grammar Nazi, please note that he is Rhyming. How often can people rhyme and keep to the laws of Grammar? Seriously, if you put it all in one panel instead of 4 different ones, you have (take a second to figure it out), a poem! Now, how often does poetry actually follow laws of grammar and logic?
Oh, and seriously, if your so intelligent that you have trouble reading this comic, how can you even stand real life? I know it appalls me to hear how people speak, and I have that strange ability to let go of the fact that not everyone remembers grammar and adjust. How do you go through the internet with all it's errors?
Yeah, I know I had a run-on, and guess what, I don't care.
I'm not talking about the fact that it's spread out over the course of four panels. I agree that there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. What I'm talking about is how the author seems to blindly throw commas all over the place like little comma-shaped shurikens.
If I may offer some assistance:
Folks on this website
Are having too much fun;
Perhaps my negative post
Will see that undone.
I need to enlighten you
And open your eyes,
That yer wrong for liking
Something I despise
There's nothing constructive
In this post to be had;
I'm only interested
In making others feel bad
I'd like to keep ranting,
But I must be on my way.
I need to steal presents
Before Christmas Day.
And if semicolons are too difficult, those can easily be replaced with periods.
To answer your question, I have no reason to care about the grammar of random individuals on the internet. Despite my somewhat-humorous name, I am not a REAL nazi, and I know how wrong it is to enforce rules upon others. I'm just trying to help, because this comic really is wonderful.
Omfg it's a damn comic. I am a spelling/grammar nazi myself, but I reserve it for actual stuff that matters. Stuff like English essays that are, you know, important stuff. "I'm just trying to help" WTF is that? "OMG too many commas! Wah, I'm gonna gouge my eyes out!"
Blahblah, will you marry me?
GrammarNazi: Seriously. It's a webcomic. Lay off. Does it really matter that much? If you care so much about the author's grammar, perhaps you should read a different comic. I comprehend this strip just fine, as well as all his others. Stop feigning intelligence if you're not intelligent enough to understand something with a few minor errors.
Sincerely,
Someone who cares about grammar, but not in a freakin' comic.
Yes, Blahblah… you spend your time on stuff that matters… like responding to random commenters on an obscure internet site. Seriously, if you think pointing out errors in writing are a waste of time, why did you even bother to write your post?
Monkey: Why are you trying to discourage Grammar Nazi? His feedback isn’t just useless bitching. His careful and accurate explanations of the problems with the comic’s verse can improve the author’s writing skills, making future comics better. “Constructive criticism” really does exist – it’s not just a phrase people made up to justify insulting everything.
"Absolutely horrifying"? If use of commas qualify as "absolutely horrifying" for you, I guess I'm glad that you have such an uneventful life. Personally, I reserved terms like that for things like the oil spill that's taking over the planet and hurricane Katrina.
It's poetic verse style grammar.
Not traditional grammar, there's a difference.
Because this is a poem, grammar only applies in the way the creator feels fit.
I'd recommend a certain poem for you to try to comprehend with literally so many grammatical errors it verges on incomprehensible, but unfortunately I cannot remember the title or author, as I last read it two years ago. If you find one though that fits the description, then that's what I'm referring to, and it's considering a masterpiece of American Literature. You don't know whether his grammar mistakes were intentional or unintentional, so you can't complain about them.
It's funny because this same comic won an award for best writing.
In-your-end-O!
@somelamename, oh, and your grammer/punctuation are terrible.
Nice tip of the hat to Dr. Seuss.
Laughed so hard I spilled my juice.
With a spill of the juice and a tip of the hat
The horse disappeared in five seconds flat.
Your comics always have that nice funny touch,
Five a week? k, I laughed too much.
The comments that come forth and throws daggers your way,
Are apparently from the sad minority with no friends whom to play.
Keep up the great work, you deserve a hug,
There's no comic better than that of the Bug.
salmonBone
Ha-ha! That was great! Thanks a lot! Gotta show my friends this.
This comic reminds me of someone I once knew.
…and on a lighter note – once again this is brilliant stuff!
Too funny Adam! I was wondering how much "hate" I was going to see in the comments today. 😀
I knew this post would attract some Grinches.
aah, a Summer Christmas comic.NICE ;D
A wee bit early for Christmas in July aren't we?
I'll forgive you this time.
Hahaha trolled people are funny
So Adam, you are the man.
I used to think that my brother was lame for staying up at nights and chuckling at web comics while me and my friends did cool things. I read some of those comics and I got way to bored way to quickly.
After stubleupon brought me the holy grail of Bug, I spent the last 3 hours reading every comic on here. I could count the number of comics that didn't make me laugh aloud on one hand. Not only is it the funniest comic I have ever read(Including newspaper comics), but the comments that people make are just as hilarious. It is a community of funny, and I will have to say, you made a bug out of me. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to reading Bug 5 days a week before I have to go to class.
-Fizzle
Thanks a lot! Great to hear that you like the community as well!
@Grammar Nazi: He has to use the commas because of the comic format. If he hadn't used commas, people would have read the lines like a normal sentence. Because of the constraints of a speech bubble, a line break every few words is to be expected. He used the commas to force us to read it like a rhyme or sing-songy poem. If he had published the poem in a traditional format, the commas would be unnecessary, but the speech bubbles' small size made them a must for the joke to be fully understood.
Thank you!
This post is a win.
Thanks for replying to Grammar Nazi politely, instead of calling him stupid for bothering to help the author, as others have done. And thanks for your comment; I, too, didn’t understand why the commas were there until reading your post.
To be fair, "Please go back to elementary school and pass the third grade" isn't that polite either.
I'm sure GrammarNazi would know that if he/she drew comics for a living or did any form of creative writing. I imagine if the dialogue were to have semi-colons in it, it would ruin the poetry reading feel to it. However, if Adam had shown the dialogue to be coming from the computer and not from Bug, then I would see the need for semi-colons.
Gah, this comic sucks at sucking. It's just so terrible at being a bad comic.
i whonder how many ppl got the fact that this is a compliment XD
Hilarious… LOVE IT!
Now, please tell me Grammar Nazi is being very hip, "Meta" and tongue in cheek…
Yeah, I don't think that's what the Nazi is going for.
Yeah, I was really hoping myself that GN was just being a hater because the comic was about haters, but now I think s/he is just being a jerkass.
The Nazi's first comment was a perfect example of the kind of thing I was making fun of in the comic. The comment provided nothing constructive and concluded with:
"Please go back to elementary school and pass the third grade."
That line serves no other purpose than being flat-out mean. This isn't something a fan would say who's trying to help me with my comic. It's just a pompous statement.
GrammarNazi actually apologized for the third grade comment. What happened to his comment? (Just curious.)
Deleted it. I'm done putting up with that person.
Putting up with me? The only comments you deleted were the constructive and helpful ones that you claim to love so much, plus the apology. If you're just trying to make me into a scapegoat, I think you're much more of a nazi than I am.
You're right. I shouldn't have deleted your comment. Let's move on.
Here, I'll even repost your apology:
I sincerely apologize for that. It was unnecessary and mean. I really am trying to help (sorry about the name, RuTemple), and I can promise you that the commas are 100% inconvenient, confusing, and, just in case you're wondering, grammatically incorrect. I first interpreted "yer wrong for liking, something I despise" as perhaps meaning that our Grinchy narrator despised the very act of liking itself, because, grammatically, that's the only thing it *could* mean. You can remove the commas, and, assuming your rhymes are good enough (which they are) and you indent properly (which you did), anyone will be able to hear the poetic sound as soon as they read it. Of course, I figure you probably won't take any of my suggestions now, because your incredibly loyal fans have ganged up on me, and you'll want to support them by making a point against me. So whatever. It's your comic; do what you want. ^_^
lmao bug grinch is rad awsm update 😀
I know someone who parallels this particular comic, even the generational implantation of his established ideals. Grammar aside, I love how Bug has Little Bug completely enveloped in his scheme to concur happiness. Little Bug is content just to be involved with dad. This reference to a particular Grinch story, we all know how that ended, leads me to the conclusion that Bug is sublimely saying, “Try what I will but I will try what I want
Genius.
Love it! Loving Little Bug as a nod to Max, the Grinch's faithful dog.
It'd be fine without the commas adding to the linebreaks
and anyone naming themselves GrammarNazi has Godwined themselves out of the conversation before they begin.
Up the Bug! Yay!
hahahah the irony of dealing with a hater, in the comments sections for a comic about Haters!
This is a really good description of trolls, though I don't understand what that comma is doing in the second panel.
You do not need a comma after every line break. Commas in poems go in at the same time you'd use it if it was a regular sentence: when there is a slight pause. There is generally a pause after a line break in a poem, but that's a 'standard feature,' if you will, of poems. You do not need to use specific punctuations to have those pauses. A comma at the end of a line makes that pause a little longer and, as stated before, should be used sparingly and at about the same times as they would be used in prose, with maybe a little more stylistic leeway.
Now THIS is a constructive comment that's informative, and not just some radnom troll trying to be a critic. =)
OH MY GOD THE COMMAS DETRACT SO MUCH FROM THE COMIC THAT I HAVE TO RANT. Guh, normally the comments are funny, this time, I was expecting my head to hit the desk reading so much about…commas.
comma comma comma. comma comma commacommacomma! comma comma comma comma-comma-comma? cooooooooooooommmmmmmmaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! =D
(translation) {, , ,. , , ,,,! , , , ,-,-,? ,!!!!}
[i couldn't stop myself XD sorry lolz]
(fogorot to add) another good title for this could be 'The Song of the Troll' or mabye 'Ode to a Troll'.
This episode is my favorite cause I use it very often on forums, facebook, and other sites where bunch of haters spend their time 🙂
Usually nothing more should be added after posted link to this page!
Wow! This actually makes a lot of sense!
….but wait…
His heart grew three sizes that day, right? So why…
….unless… Oh my God, there’s MORE THAN ONE OF ‘EM!!
Oh my Lordy, people. If you have something constructive to say, say it politely; if not, get off the comic strip. Even if you think someone else is being rude, just ignore it and don’t give gratify their comments with a response-they’ll get deleted eventually. No need for everyone to argue.
Love the kid bug with the antler >w<
