Just Chillin’
Well, I’ve decided to go back to using pen & paper to make my strips. It felt good to take a break and fire up my Cintiq, but I missed my old drawing tools. The cool thing is that I wanted to see if I could make strips on my tablet that were indistinguishable from the pen & paper ones, and while I did set out to draw all of last week’s comics solely on the Cintiq, I did draw Friday’s strip on paper and no one seemed to notice. Cue Fist pump.
The main reason I went to the Cintiq was that the pen I was using to do the lettering (a Faber Castell Artist Pitt Pen size S) was giving me a lot of problems. I’ve really struggled with getting consistent lines with those suckers. I decided, going forward, that I’ll use one size bigger to do the lettering – which is what I used for today’s strip. I also was hoping that the Cintiq would drastically speed up my process. It did go a little faster, but not enough to really buy me that much time.
So that’s that. The great experiment is over. I’m back to drawing my comic with feather dipped in ink by candle light while shaking my fist at those damn kids with their Wacoms and Yiynovas. Cue fist shake.
Zippers are totally for nerds! Until you hit 50, and you start feeling COLD all the dang time! Shaking my fist at the clouds that bring rain and snow. Think Abe Simpson…
If you’re a woman, when you hit about 50 you start feeling hot all the dang time. Layers are more important than zippers.
I think that how much you zip up, is inversely proportional with the age somehow.
Love the cool teenager bug. and the fully-clothed bug in the last panel looks great too.
also, “p-p-p-p-p-pfft”! HAHAHA!
About the Cintiq:
I’m one of those who didn’t notice that last fridays strip was done “classic style”. But that’s mainly because I don’t care what you draw on. I like to read your comic mainly because of the content, not the look.
So what you really proved with your experiment is that your toolset neither affects your drawing skills nor style. Let alone the weird yet funny ideas behind it. So I’m happy with whatever tools give you the least hassle to continue drawing. 🙂
Adam: like Kai, I don’t care what you use to make the comics. But I’m positive that part of the appeal of Bug Martini is that *you* care this much about every little detail. So thank you for that 🙂
Thanks! I’m just glad I can keep the look consistent with both paper and drawing tablet.
Ditto!
Another Christmas gift season is upon us and still no book?
I was hoping to have it done by November, but it’s just not enough time to do it right. And rather than rush it for Christmas, I decided to just work on it and make sure I do it right. I’m in the process of proofreading the strips that’ll go in book one right now. My lord, there are a lot of things I need to fix!
If someone gave me a bugmartini book for Christmas I’d marry them. You don’t want me to be a lonely old spinster, do you Adam?
Tauntauns are SO old republic.
I must still be a teenager then… I still have short sleeves on and it was cold enough i had to scrape the windows on my car this morning and i am now sweating my ass off in my office
Shouldn’t there be a comma after the word “teenager” in the first panel?
Yeah, probably. I’ll throw one in there.
I don’t know… The comma looks out of place. There is no break in thought to require one.
Example: I went to the store, the other day.
See? Weird.
I’m using a comma before a dependent clause that begins a sentence. “I went to the store” is not a dependent clause and doesn’t need a comma after it.
I’m going to stand here and nod my head like I understand your fancy words…
OH! “C L A U S E”…
For some reason I saw “D A U S E”
The c and l are too close together.
Don’t give up the digital world, the more you use it the faster you get! Also it helps tauntauns from becoming extint, somehow, I think… I promise!
I think another advantage to pen-and-ink is being able to sell original art. Gotta keep those multiple income streams going!
Yeah, if selling originals wasn’t viable, I’d totally be drawing these things on the Cintiq.
It’s all about layering and add scarf to the combination and it will be gold. No zippering for me no sirre!
Hmm, this used to be a thing for me.
Then my jacket took an act of defiance for its perpetually unzipped state and broke. Can’t zip it whether I like it or not now.
