I assume that there is some sort of a not-so-subtle homage to berke breathed and/or bloom county in this strip. However, I think it was a bit too subtle for your audience.
I have so missed those characters. It’s an amazing thing when a cartoonist is so talented that 25 years after he stopped drawing a strip he STILL has rabid fans.
My daughters were actually reading “Billy and the Boingers” and “Night of the Mary Kay Commandos” over last week. They were unknowingly preparing for his return.
P.S.
Love the bug translations. You’re awesome as always.
It pains me to read of ANYONE not knowing of Bloom County. It was often as sweet and endearing as Calvin & Hobbes, but was able to stand for so much!
(But never come across as shrill like political strips.)
Oh, and can anyone definitively confirm that it was NOT Robin Williams doing voicework under an assumed name in the Bloom County special? It was during a period when he did do a LOT of uncredited appearances….
Adam,
I’ve commented on many a strip here on your webpage. But I have to tell you…this one is definitely in my top five of all time. You probably don’t recall, but I’ve said in the past that I put your comic up there with Bloom County, Calvin & Hobbes and The Far Side. I’m not sure who would round out my top five but you, sir, are in the top 4.
Thank you for this. Thank you, thank you.
Jeff
P.S. I agree with the “Sqweeeeee!!” from up above.
P.P.S. Think you can use your connections to get Gary Larson & Bill Watterson to “get back in the game”?
Wow! Thanks, Jeff! I really appreciate that. I love, and look up to, all the comics you listed.
As far as “connections” go, I only know a few other goofball cartoonists. Don’t think even Old Odin One Eye himself could pull Watterson or Larson out of retirement. We’d have to bonk them on the head and trick them into thinking it was still the 80s.
Technically, Breathed revived “Bloom County” about 10 years ago as Sunday-only “Opus”, although I’m guessing people don’t count that as a “Bloom” revival
Been reading through the archive for a year? Still not caught up. I realize this comic is old for the regular readers. But, I still felt obliged to comment on this one. It is really good. The homage is perfect. You can feel the Bloom County vibe. Well done sir.

Yes. Really subtle…
Nope! There’s bug-Opus, and bug-Steve-Dallas! Awesome! And bug-TOES!
Were you planning on doing an homage in your comic?
Seriously, though — that’s an AMAZING Bug-Steve-Dallas.
Wow. I didn’t know you were going to have Berkley ghost-draw your comic today.
Your lettering is a dead ringer for Breathed’s. It’s amazing, and so is Bug-Steve.
OK… this is the first one I don’t get.
I’m going to have to Google this Bloom County thing.
Yes, Yes you are. It’ll be worth it.
You must be under 30 years old and/or non-American.
Nope. Just missed this one, I guess.
38 in Mich.
Also, and this might sound odd, but I only know OF Dr. Suess.
I’ve never actually experienced his stuff – aside from the Grinch cartoon.
I’m loving it too!

I think you need a Bugalope. The Russians have a Bugalope, you know what that means? BUGALOPE GAP!

YAAAASSSSSS!!!!!
Adam, this is truly one of your Best Comics EVAR!!!!! And that’s saying a lot because they’re all awesome.
