I think I have a handle on nooks, but what on Earth is a cranny? I mean, has anyone ever used the word “cranny” without preceding it with the word “nook”?
It’s actually a corruption of “crooks and nannies” – by convention, you’d first storm around the place looking for thieves, and then go hassle your mother, au pair, governess, or nanny to see if she put it away somewhere.
existence inherently contains nooks and/or crannies SOMEWHERE in some fashion. so while our normal vision might not see any, there would still be some SOMEWHERE
even if the entire universe was a giant sphere with us in the center. you would still have “nooks” and “crannies” in the sphere in the chronological warping of the universe (think of a blanket from the perspective of a 2D creature. he thinks its 2D with no holes in it…but in the third dimension it also exists outside of the 2D plane the creature can see. our universe is the same ecpect instead of a 3D object looked by a creature..its a higher dimensional object (string theory says eleven, other modals say more or less) and us instead of a creature)…basicly, our universe CANT be a flat “blanket” otherwise alot of the phenomenon that happen in our universe (time/space dilation ect) could not exist
so its impossible
which means if someone hid the nooks/crannies…you should either wait, (so time pass’s, so you get a different 3D “slice” of the 4D+ universe. or go back in time somehow.)
…….in other words…what you already do right? try to look for it another day.
(yes, I ruined the joke. its a anti-joke-chicken-thing….look it up)
I’ve read of “book nooks” and “breakfast nooks”, but I’ve never heard of Book- or Breakfast Crannies. So obviously, nooks exist, but crannies are made up. Probably by a drunken Pilgrim who couldn’t find the buckles for his shoes or hat…
As far as I (as a non-native speaker that never heard this phrase) understand the google results the difference between nook and cranny might be clearer if you think of a stone/brick wall. A nook is some hidden place formed by walls, whereas a cranny is some opening within these walls. In modern terms: checking above/behind/next to some piece of furniture is within the “nook” category, checking INSIDE the furniture (i.e. a drawer etc.) is within the “cranny” category.
But these are just my personal theories from the first two google results and heavy extrapolation
Not bad! As a native English speaker (USAdian version), I think that description makes a lot of sense.
(And is a victrolosaurus a dinosaur who looks like a victrola? ::grin::)
A nook, in common Canadian parlance I may add, is a small subsection or area in a much larger space – ie Breakfast Nook, or the nook in the wall of a stairwell in some grand residence.
The work can be used interchangeably with Cubby in a lot of instances though it is a more formal and organized word that Nook.
A cran·ny – ˈkranē/
noun: cranny; plural noun: crannies
A small, narrow space or opening.
synonyms: chink, crack, crevice, slit, split, fissure, rift, cleft, opening, gap, aperture, cavity, hole, hollow, niche, corner
So if you look at your sofa, chair, drivers seat, easy chair or chesterfield, crannies would be the spaces between or under the cushions where a lot of change, pens, car keys, popcorn, potato chip bits and, of late, TV remotes and cell phones, end up.
Nook:
1. a corner, as in a room.
2. any secluded or obscure corner.
3. any small recess:
a breakfast nook.
4. any remote or sheltered spot:
a shady nook that was ideal for a picnic.
Cranny:
1. a small, narrow opening in a wall, rock, etc.; chink; crevice; fissure:
They searched every nook and cranny for the missing ring.
2. a small out-of-the-way place or obscure corner; nook.
So there you go. A nook is a small out-of-the-way place and a cranny is… a nook.
Well, somebody has clearly never played Animal Crossing.

…….O.o
ok……ou’ter Odd on’e from Adam
And what if somebody hides the Nooks and Crannies, where are you supposed to search for them then?

Imagine if the founders of ‘Google’ had decided to use ‘Cranny’ instead’.
“Hold on. Let me Cranny that…”
What would the ‘doodles’ look like?
Well, Obviously they would be drawn by small cranky grandmother.

Cheers for the explanations. I learnt something today!

visit the Grand Crannyon!
How about the grand crayon?
I would visit a crayon that’s over 200 miles long.
I once had pocket just big enough for a single cranberry. All it was good for was holding a single key, provided it wasn’t too big.
I couldn’t understand why the pocket maker couldn’t just double the small amount of pocket fabric, and make the pocket so much more convenient to use.
