It depends on the reason for CPR. Compression-only CPR works for a very specific type of cardiac arrest – when the heart stops suddenly, before breathing issues occur. In this case, the body is already saturated with oxygen and rescue breathing isn’t always necessary.
Drowning would definitely require rescue breathing, as a person’s oxygen levels would be low. Same for choking, anaphylaxis, and a number of other causes.
The last time I took CPR training, the instructor actually said that they switched to a compressions only model specifically because even though rescue breathing was usually helpful, so many people were grossed out about putting their mouth on another person’s mouth that most people wouldn’t do CPR at all even if they could.
Or with swimming-pool chlorinated water? And you’d think freshwater wouldn’t be a problem, but the kind of water sources that are fresh enough to take a flavourless drink from aren’t exactly lakes for swimming in.
I thought the latest was just compressions were good. With swimmers though I expect the “Clear the airway.” is the biggest priority.

He’s in real trouble–they don’t make Certs any more.
Which flavor mouthwash goes best with sea water?

As a paramedic I got a real chuckle out of this one.
Is anyone else having trouble with the image loading?
Had some website issues. Image should be visible now.
Yes, there’s no image here from me.
Same–no image to see. And it appears comments of 25 April are being attached to the comments for the comic of 23 April.
My mistake in that I thought I had reached the posting for 25 April but see that this is still last Monday’s strip. Saw it then but can’t view it now.
