Extra Value Menu
So one thing that’s been bugging me for a while now is my rather sparse menu bar. I decided to add “expand menu bar” to my list of goals for March (the other goal is to start selling prints and original artwork).
One thing I’m planning on adding to the menu bar is an “about” tab. It’ll bring a drop-down menu of three other tabs: “about the cartoonist”, “about the strip” and “about the process”. I’m excited to create these new pages but just haven’t found the time to work on them. I’m in the process of creating a buffer so that oughta buy me some time. I’ll also be adding a “store” tab to the menu someday (once I figure out how to open an online store and have merchandise to sell).
Is there anything else you guys would like to see in the menu bar?
That all sounds great, a quick perusal of other comic sites gives a few ideas:
Links to other comics or your favorite links page
Banners/logos for us fans to put on our sites
Extras (wallpapers, avatars)
RSS
Forums (who knows, eventually?)
Contact (but it seems like that could be on the About you page)
One other little thing- Not quite menu bar suggestion per se, but I like being able to click on a site's name/logo picture to get back to the home page from a given specific page, so if Bug up there on the left was clickable that'd be awesome.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the feedback!
I never thought about banners and wallpaper. Guess I'll have to figure out how to make those.
The Bug logo used to be clickable but I somehow disabled that ability when I set up the Project Wonderful ads. I'll eventually fix it.
Here's a pragmatic idea: The first time I visited this page I was a bit confused trying to find the navigation bar for older strips. I believe this is probably the most commonly used item on any web comic page, so placing it is a little more prominent place (and not in a separate box than the strip) would possibly be a good idea. 🙂
Having said that, let me add that your comic immediately made it into the web comics I visit daily (and these are only a select few). Good work! 🙂
I just discovered this comic (love it!) but itd be really great to see a simple archive page like this one: http://comicpress.org/demo-s/archives/archive-lis…
a bunch of webcomics have the calender view, but i can never navigate them, and a list is both simple and easy!
I agree with John about the calendar view, it is often frustrating to use, I think a good keyword search (Penny Arcade's is a good one) is easier to use especially if you're looking for a specific comic in the archive.
If you added a merch store then i'd buy one, guaranteed!
I really like your archive view with the different year sections and comic titles, that'll make it easy to find my favorites.
Your comics continue to give my day a great start. You getting good input from your fans, I hope you can use some of it.
hey adam, i gotta say, love these new changes!
thanks for adding the archives page, and the new look makes it look a lot cleaner and simpler to navigate!
one thing i was thinking was that i know you want to make three specific "about" pages, but that they would take some time, but maybe you could make a very quick and general about page (just one) for the time being
but really all i care about is that you keep making these awesome comics!
Agreed. I've been putting it off because I want to make my about page really thorough but you're right, I should put something down. I'll try to get something up this week.
"Is there anything else you guys would like to see in the menu bar?"
early, related art, before/during the creation of the strip!
related or unrelated sketches.
I like behind-the scenes type stuff, relating to the creative process.
or just more cool artwork!
