Technical Difficulties
Hi everyone.
Just wanted to give you all the scoop on what the heck is happening to my website. My host server decided to do some maintenance this morning and my site went down. No big deal, it happens. But my site stayed down for a good six hours. I contacted them on my lunch break and got the runaround. I got home from work and the site was still down. I contacted them again, again, and again. Finally, the best they could do was to give me this lousy, default version of WordPress. No ComicPress (which is the theme I use to post comics) and no apologies.
They broke my site and refused to fix it.
So now I’m back to square one. I’ll figure it out. But let this be a lesson to all you webcartoonists out there – BACK UP YOUR WEBSITE! Do NOT for a second think that your host can do it for you.
I’ll be spending the weekend repairing the damage they’ve done, but the site should be up by Monday. Thank you very much for your patience.
How awful!! OMG!! Good luck, and no pressure, we’ll still love you!!
UUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO BUGGGGGG!!!!!!!
Poor Bug 🙁 Although, I must say kudos on the Twitter comic post! Nicely done 🙂
That sucks. Good luck sorting it all out. I’m rooting for you.
Holy crap, that’s just cold… I wouldn’t’ve imagined it could actually happen. I do love how they keep their “Proudly powered by WordPress” tagline… I reckon it’s due for some tampering.
But on the bright side, I’m certainly looking forward to seeing some WordPress-bagging comics in the not-too-distant future. Every cloud, right? 😛
It’s not WordPress’ fault this happened. The blame for this lies with my web host.
Ah, I assumed WordPress was the host… I’m still searching for a silver lining then. Hope it all works out.
You know, baited breath.
Sorry you’re having trouble.
Dang it, it cut off the setup for the joke.
As I was trying to say:
I wait for the next comic with a worm on my tongue.
You know, baited breath.
Sorry you’re having trouble.
We’re glad that your site was okay now..Thank you for the lesson that you shared.
Well, that sucks, i wanted to get my bug fix for the day =(
Still, good to see you’re still around and working on it, looking forward to monday. Good luck
Love your comic, good luck fixing your site and everything : )
well thanks for letting us know. i was so worried!
Nice photo of sheep country (Scotland? Ireland? New Zealand?)… but NO BUG!
Sorry the Web host was hostile (get it?). Also sorry for all the work you’ll have setting it up again. But it’s worth it. The world cannot be deprived of Bug.
That’s poop. Great job on the effort and keeping a forward-thinking attitude on recovering everything. Best wishes!
Nooooes! *sobs* Those jerks! Take your time to get it all fixed Adam we will be patient!
Ok, so you want to know what’s funny? I’m going through my daily webcomics and a number of them haven’t updated for various reasons. But as i’m hovering over my BUG link, i’m thinking to myself, “yeah, bug is always good for a laugh and always updates. I wonder wha…oh crap.”
So i’m very sorry that you’re getting the runaround from your host. You know if you want to make a temp home over at comic dish, you’re more than welcome to it. We don’t have any kick ass templates like you once had, it’s all just simple stuff.
Just thought i’d throw you the invite.
That sucks majorly man! I’m a big fan of your comic. It’s intelligent, witty, and best of all silly. Best of luck getting everything up and running again. Can’t wait to read more of bug! 🙂
Please tell that all your comics are safely archived somewhere! I’d be sad if they weren’t!
Yes. All the comics are safe and saved in multiple places.
Looks like your website got pest control (cricket sounds) … wow, they really put their foot down on this one (more cricket sounds) … Hope it works for ya though, love the comic keep it up!!
I’m guessing we’ll soon see some unflattering goofy IT-bugs
Jeez man that sux! Those sound like such irresponsible dicks! Hope you get website up soon. Good Luck!
WHAT.
Oh man, I can’t even say how bad I feel for you. Here’s hoping you can get everything back up without too much trouble.
Post the name of the hosting company. Otherwise it don’t count.
Dear Adam,
First, I second Batman and Shannon Heit’s comments.
Second, any hints on what host you had? ^^
I’m truly sorry for you having problems with your site and I really hope you can get everything back. I love bug and I was, probably like all your fans, very worried.
I wish you best of luck in repairing the done damage.
How the hell am I supposed to get through the weekend without Bug?
You always get through weekends without Bug.
But usually they involve honey and nudity.
dont worry Adam things will work out for the best in the end + I can already see a strip coming out of this 😀
all the best , from your fanbase in Romania 😀
Must have been a bug. See you soon, and have a nice weekend 😉
wow… that sucks.
Hey Adam,
I’d gladly help you with setting up a backup system using something like rsync. Heck, I even like your comic so much that I’d be willing to spare some space on my VPS for regular backups of Bug. I know how hosts can be assholes and have registered a VPS (I’m one of those techy open source guys) and run my own thing.
In any case, I’ll be very thrilled when the site gets restored to normality. You should check if Google has cached versions of your site as well as the Waybackmachine.org or some other archiving service.
Good luck, hope to see you up and running soon.
It seems that waybackmachine.org has at least a couple of backups of site complete with images: http://web.archive.org/web/20101201171526/http://www.bugcomic.com/
Good news?
Just wanted to say that Bug is one of the first sites I visit M-W-F, good luck getting up and running again, we’ll all be waiting here and cheering!
Well, hang in there, Adam. Those are some lovely trees, by the way. Maybe you can work some sheep into a strip in the near future.
I second the sheep strip.
NOOOOOOOO!
Adam, you should do the next strip about this.
Dreamhost is great, as long as you don’t need uptime or support. I hated using them and now direct clients to WebFaction, MediaLayer, or MediaTemple. If you get WordPress going again, http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/backwpup/ is the best way to automatically backup the entire site to a third party such as dropbox, amazon s3, ftp, email, etc. Let me know if you have any q’s – all I do at work is customize WordPress and I want to see bug back online.
See my avatar for my feelings on ein Host Server.
Damn you Bug’s web host. Damn you to hell, to hell I say.
Those bastards!
Hope you get it up and running soon 🙂
Awwwh! Good luck with getting everything back up, sounds like a LOT of work. Can’t wait to get my bug back 😉
I think the host got a noob systems admin in who did not understand a bug fix; so the person just killed the only “Bug” that he could find.
No worries mate, your fans will wait patiently =)
That is super major suck. But I understand (as do most of us, I’m sure). I eagerly await the return of the amazing Bug comics, and the ease of your frustrations as well. Meanwhile, drink some chai from your favorite coffee shop, I find chai makes everything better if made right.
Time to name and shame! Who is your host, so I never accidentally use them?
Your comic is still one of, if not the best. Will be glad to have it back.
Thanks for the tip, good luck.
That thoroughly sucks! Good luck and who knows it might give you some ideas 😉
Fear not, Mr. Huber! Your legion is still loyal to the Bug, and we eagerly await his reappearance. There are no hard feelings here, just a great amount of unpleasant surprise. There is even a small insect crawling on my screen as I type, attempting to show its sympathies (I think). Best of luck, and don’t lose heart!
That sucks man! Who are you hosted with? If you’re using Cpanel you can manually do backups every now and again. If you are looking to switch hosts I recommend HostGator. They’ve been awesome thus far. They host all the websites I design.
I hope you sort things out soon. We’re rooting for you! 🙂
Lesson learned: Don’t trust other people to do your server hosting. Do it yourself.
Thanks for clarifying that Adam, been trying to get my daily scoop of bug relentlessly these past few days. But from all these comments I can see we are all rooting for you 🙂 Good luck, hope to see good ol’ bug again pretty soon.
Good luck getting everything back up and running, we can’t wait. 🙂
Kill them with Fire!!!!
When did you make your last backup?
Do you need a hand restoring the comicpress database?
Man, that really bites
Your comic is a daily ray of sunshine in my life
Your host has taken all the joy out of my life, reduced me to a mere observer of life, a shell of a man…
Okay, perhaps a touch melodramatic but a) still sucks and b) look forward to your return
Well, I certainly wouldn’t stick around with this host (Dreamhost?).
Since everything’s down, now (unfortunately) seems like the best time to move to somewhere more reliable.
If you’re looking for recommendations, I use WiredTree and have had a great year and a half with them after going through a few other hosting options and a similar situation.
Have you gone into cPanel and phpMyAdmin to see if the old WP database is still there? Or through FTP to see if your files are anywhere on the server?
Once you get up and running again install the WordPress plugin WP-DBManager on your site and configure it to e-mail a database backup to yourself. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-dbmanager/
Let me know if you have any questions along the way and best of luck.
