Oh gosh. I hate to say I know this from experience, but I do… And it really IS super boring. Even if the person isn’t unconcious. You’re basically sitting there like “Okay, I’m here for you, I want you to know I’m here for you… Still here for you… MAN I have a short attention span!”
Basically – always make sure your phone has tons of games and apps… Just in case a loved one ever slips into a coma or something.
…Just sayin’.
Yet another benefit of the Penny Arcade “Child’s Play” charity, which brings game consoles to children in hospitals! (Half the reason a pediatrician friend of mine goes to PAX every year is to support the charity, which she says is actually DESPERATELY needed, because hospitals are SO amazingly boring for kids. The other reasons are board gaming and M:TG tournaments.)
Yeah… you’re sitting there and you get cold – so you borrow a lab coat. On a trip to the coffee machine a nurse tells you to take an old guy to Radiology. Radiology gives you another old guy to take back to his room. Old guy has to poop… and that’s how you end up being and unpaid orderly looking for a bedpan.
Then there is being there with someone you need to support while their family member is in the hospital. Talk about doubly boring! You’ll do anything to relieve that boredom.
You know, The National Enquirer isn’t really that bad a newspaper.
Hey kids! Need something to make that good joke *great*? Try adding a hobo! Yes, hobos make *any*thing funnier! Hobos in the library! Hobos in the hospital! Hobos at a UN meeting! Anytime, anywhere, for instant funny, just add hobos!
I’ve been on both ends of this;
First, I hate waking up and having 5 people staring at you…
Second, I have stuff I could be doing instead of watching someone sleep…
You have to admit, Golden Girls is the shit. 🙂
Absolutely.

I’ve got myself covered with a DS and some pokemon. Its a cure-all for any loved one in a coma!
I mean for the boredom, not the coma.
Also, sounds like what you’re saying could apply to someone in a coma or someone watching Lifetime equally well. XD

I think that in this economy, creating jobs is *always* a good thing.

Brought to you by the fine folks at Hasbro.
Or nuns. Nuns look funny doing anything because all you see them do in real life is walk, ring bells and purse their lips at people.
I’d probably end up with props, to make it look like they’d been in the coma for years.
