When I was a kid I hated bananas. They made me gag when I tried to eat them.
Then when I was in college in the cafeteria, I saw a beautiful young woman put a banana on her tray. I thought, “Hmm… if she eats bananas, then maybe they’re not so bad.” This was during the Chiquita Bananas campaign that showed ads with the tagline “Chiquita Bananas: Quite possibly the world’s most perfect food.” — which basically guilted me into thinking that I was neglecting my health by not eating any bananas.
Both the Chiquita Bananas advertisements and seeing this beautiful student with a banana made me reconsider my opposition to bananas. So I peeled a banana, took a bite… and I gagged. (I was able to consume the whole banana, although I gagged many times.)
I kept trying to eat bananas after that, and I found I was gagging less and less. Eventually I could eat a whole banana without gagging even once. And when I later had a banana that didn’t come from the school cafeteria, I discovered it tasted a lot better than the cafeteria ones. Soon after that, I would occasionally have a craving to eat a banana. It was then I realized I no longer detested them.
Looking back on all this, it’s funny to think that if it weren’t for that very cute college student, I would probably still dislike bananas to this very day. Now I better understand why advertisers consistently show their products being used by fun, attractive people. Basically, if reason alone won’t win you over, maybe seeing their product alongside a gorgeous model will!
You had an opinion on a food item based on the form it was served in at an educational institution’s cafeteria?
J-L, I came here because I’m a Bug fan, but I have to say I very much enjoyed your comment. I look forward to your next post.
For me it was Stove Top stuffing (or, any of it’s generic equivalents).
It was gross, wet, mushy bread with green bits all over it.
Then, I had it were my mom hadn’t made it and it was pretty good.
Turns out moms don’t always make the best foods.
Sorry, but your doctor may very well check your ptassium level. Just not with a dipstick though.
I got mine checked, and now I’m on four horse pill sized potassium tablets a day.

Ananas phone!
Bananas are radioactive. We could, in theory, make a bananabomb.
Whether that is a good or bad thing I leave to you to decide.
If we got rid of Bananas, we would need a new fruit for the minions to obsess over. Banana!
Cucumber telephones for the win!
King Crabs!
They’re adjustable for any head size.
I can’t eat ’em. May as well make ’em useful, elsehow.
…I love bananas and banana bread.
…But I recently started a med that raises potassium levels to point I probably should not eat them much 🙁
Hmm, I never eat pop-tarts (and very rarely eat fast food) and I’m still fine, so we can get rid of them all as well, right, Adam? 😉
Nothing has appeared for the last two weeks. Does anyone know whether Adam (and his family) are OK?
It’s been only two weeks – in the summer time. They may be on vacation?
I agree It has been two weeks since an update here or on his patreon site. I know that he tends to prioritize his family and day job over this comic strip, but if he has quit his comic strip. I would like to know.
Yes. And previously Adam let us know in advance when they went on vacation. He even brought in other artists to cover his absence once.
Those were the times!
So, it’s been a while! Was this a planned hiatus, or a more permanent ending? Hope Adam and family is doing okay?
