I chuckled, but this one is quite likely to offend a bunch of adoptees (and adoptors). For understandable reasons, the subject is very sensitive for many of those involved. Watterson got so much mail after a small “adoption” reference that he edited the strip before it was published in book form.
Yeah, it’s a sensitive subject, but I think most of the easily offended people steer clear of Bug Martini by now (well, those that already know about it, anyway).
I’m going to have to say ‘bad form’. I’m neither adopted nor have adopted (yet), but I’m heavily involved with my cousin’s adopted children, and I admit, until I became so I was unaware of the amount of trauma, fear, insecurity, and guilt that is often an intrinsic part of adoptive situations. It’s not about being offended, it’s about being aware that the sense of being unwanted, unloveable is a very real part of many people’s lives, and it’s soul-destroying.
Yeah, this strip is only funny if you come from the principle that “it’s silly, of course adopted kids are wanted”. But they have been given up to adoption, for numerous reasons, and a child will keep this trauma for quite a long time.
Also, there ARE bad adoptive parents, who look the part, have financially and socially what it takes to be accepted as adoptive parents, but realized afterwards that they’re absolutely not able to take good care of a child. Imagine then how said child feel when they’re sent back.
I wasn’t offended, but it made me want to cry and I feel awful.
It doesn’t turn me off the comic as a whole, but I definitely don’t like this particular one.
I can see how it might make some people laugh and I don’t begrudge them their amusement. There’s room in this world for different tastes without taking offense at what other people enjoy.
We’ve adopted a total of three kids and FWIW I loved this strip. We didn’t get any receipts but there WAS an order form. Under ‘# of children’ my wife wrote “One or two… surprise us!” Our twins turn 23 in May.

I like how the baby is in a paper bag and a basket 🙂
Also, it reminded me of this strip… https://www.bugmartini.com/comic/up-for-adopt-shun/
Hey, my orphan wont stop singing “The sun will come out tomorrow”. Who do I go to about getting this one fixed?

Remember folks, have your orphan spayed or neutered after taking it home.
Too far, dude.
