I’ve often told people that “I’m actually a Transformer. I’m a pretender. When my fleshy exterior rips away, I can turn into a dinette set. The other Decepticons make fun of me.
I was an HOUR ahead of beating you to the point, but I decided against it because I haven’t had anything to do with Transformers for ages and I wasn’t sure if I was remembering something from canon or something from one of those vilified Bay-tastrophes. Glad I decided against it, because it’s a lot nicer to hear it from someone who’s sure.
Yes, nothing but vehicles.
My understanding was that Autobots can transform into vehicles, hence the name, and decepticons transform into whatever they want. Very balanced…
Nope… Originally, according to the cartoon, what happened was that the ship carrying them crashed on Earth millions of years ago. A few woke up early, and scanned DINOSAURS, before the Ark got buried again by an eruption. Millions of years later, the ground shifted, the ship’s computer woke up, and reconfigured everyone aboard based on their old job description. Decepticons got mostly military vehicles and items, while autobots (originating mostly from civilian professions) got made into trucks, cars, civilian aircraft, trains, etc.). Note that the combat engineer Decepticons were construction equipment, and the commo bots for both sides ending up as cassette decks.
Later arrivals could choose to scan what they wished, and in the sequel Beast Wars, after being lost through a wormhole, the descendants of the Autobots & Decepticons came full circle, and ended up having to scan animals again, after being dumped on Earth tens of thousands (if not a million) years BCE.
In a way, the movies mirrored this with the ancient Dinobots that appeared in the 4th movie.
Panel 3 was the Laugh-Out-Loud panel for me this time.
Today’s cartoon reminds me of that scene in the movie “Big” where Tom Hanks’s character plays with a robot that transforms into a skyscraper-like building.
Or… do you remember that Transformer that transformed into a portable cassette player? I think his name was Soundwave. Imagine, an evil robot transforming into a Sony Walkman(tm)!

Uh.
Transformers DO choose what they can turn into. They can scan objects and that’s what they become.

Yeah as far as I can remember even in all the cartoons they could just scan the vehicle they wanted.
They could, yeah. Granted they’d have to rebuild their bodies if they wanted a new alt mode but for them, that’s really not a big deal.
This is the only strip I’ve ever actually gotten annoyed at (doesn’t help I’m a Transformers nerd).

Yep, they do this is the first episode of the 80’s cartoon.
So, not sure where Adam got his info.
You’re still better off than Rung, who doesn’t even know what he turns into. (It’s officially classified as “Ornament.”)

Rescue bots has a Transformer that is afraid of heights scan a helicopter. Then a pterodactyl. Apparently Optimus hates Blades.
eggotron!
