Well, don’t pretend you can affect Adam’s stylistic choices, but my point is in usage rather than fashion. See for example https://www.bugmartini.com/comic/a-river-runs-poo-it/ to see that the word in question is normally censored.
The reason I think Adam did it this way is that there is a difference between saying, “S***” as a vulgarity and “shit” as fecal matter. I’ve seen them treated differently in the same text multiple times before.
That also seems to be the final joke in panel four, that glasses-bug is interpreting the word incorrectly.
You’d be surprised how few universally foul odors there are. Manure might stink to high heaven to a city boy, but if you grew up on a farm, it’ll just remind you of home. Garlic is considered to smell foul to most people. but if you like Italian cooking, The closest thing is US Government Standard Bathroom Malodor, developed by the military for use in crowd control and psychological warfare. It smells so bad that some people who smell it have started screaming within seconds, and is reported to have actual honest-to-goodness cartoon stink lines coming off of it. The only reason it hasn’t been put into use is because it tends to douse the person using it as well as the intended target.
I just did a quick check – either this strip has affected Google search or this is a normal search – Yeah, it’s on ebay >_< and wiki has the recipe
Dipropylene glycol 62.82%
Thioglycolic acid 21.18%
Hexanoic acid 6.00%
N-methyl morpholine 6.00%
p-cresyl isovalerate 2.18%
2-naphthalenethiol 0.91%
Skatole 0.91%
Skatole I’m “familiar” with (I know scientists who study disgust and we use it in the labs). That would seem to be the thing with the horrible smell in the list–and its bad alright–but not “panic inducing” bad. Hmm
I don’t know if this is a coincidence or what, But Good Mythical Morning is doing a special episode where they take a bath in Horse Manure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KENbOG4hvI
Here ya go, Bug!

Adam, you’re getting a bit bold with your vulgarities, methinks. That one’s among those you usually censor.
That being said, the joke is glorious.
I prefer the swears to be grawlixes. It’s classic comic technique, and it’s super clear what’s being said.

I agree that Adam normally censors it. Good work finding an example, I wanted one for my first post but was having trouble searching.
Some more recent examples of the same:

TB Tabby. You have piqued my interest. It must be mine! Is it worse than skunk?

Wait, this is actually a thing? I mean outside of a coprophilia fetish? i have never heard of this before now.

Am I really the first one to notice that we now have bugs sized (and drawn) like bugs in comparison to bugs in a comic purportedly about bugs?
