Well, it’s because it’s the parent’s responsability to take the kid to the pool sometimes. And in this society, parents are too well informed about the dangers of public pools
Heh. I’ve actually always found this extremely bizarre because I grew up in Hawaii, where swimming was SERIOUS BUSINESS. My high school actually had passing a swimming test as a graduation requirement, and I came sort-of close to not graduating because I failed to get the proper documentation the first time around.
I took art appreciation in college and it’s usless for working in my government job. I think a class on “Banishment Rituals” would have been more useful!
No, in government jobs, one needs to banish WAY more frequently. Evil just…summons itself? (For me, it used to sprout out of the ground at my shoulder yelling “What are you doing!?” while I was trying to figure out their stupid filing system. A banishment ritual would have been VERY useful.)
THe classes I remember today and that have brought me the most enjoyment were not the accounting/finance/calculus/chemistry classes – although they were very useful in making a living. The classes that gave me happiness were the Shakespeare, Art Appreciation, Climatology, Geography, History, etc. Not needed to make a living but needed to have an interesting life.
The things I remember of chemisty are those that burn and/or explode. And math is needed there too: How much of this thing do I need to add to that amount of that thing to make the whole bottle explode? 😀
Things like these can make your life interesting, too. 😉
In Holland there’s a lot of emphasis put on swimming because of the number of canals. (Meaning most children will have a source of water they could drown in close to where they live) Apparently 96% of the children there swim and get their swimming certificates. I guess it depends on where you live (but seriously learn to swim).
Flight school cost me 5 grand (US) back in 2001. And that includes having to re-learn some stuff after I was grounded for three months after September (everyone was).
I was only making $29k a year at the time, too.
Flight school is cheaper than most people realize, if you do it right. They just assume and stay away.
In fact; if MORE people started flying, it would get cheaper as a whole.
As it is, the entire industry is held up by a few.
I live in Australia, where we also have mandatory swimming lessons in every year of primary school. Given that just about every major city in Australia is on the coast, this makes a lot of sense. There’s also a lot of emphasis on beach safety, including being sun-smart and avoiding dangerous waters, like riptides.
Debbie Downer time:
I was almost one of those infants you hear about on the news who face-plant in the bathtub and drown, except I was one of the lucky ones and survived. But since then, I have been terrified of water. Mom took me to swim classes as a pre-teen and while I was able (finally) to get in the water, I never learned to swim. When something like that happens to you as an infant, the fear is hard-wired and nearly impossible to overcome.
I too can relate to this, for all my life I have had too high a bone density &muscle mass to fat ratio (my bmi is very low naturally) to be ABLE to swim. Its not for lack of trying (and half a dozen near drownings), but rather through a lack of physical ability. When it comes to the physics of water people like me lose despite multiple professional lessons.
So please the next time one of you agile swimmers see some poor doofus trying to impress a girl by proving he can swim, save his a** before he drowns.
How do you gather that she will be the instructor?
Have you ever been to a car exhibition or similar? If you’d like to buy one of those cars, it won’t be sold by the cute girls standing around it. They’re just there to make you dream about swimming/driving through the ocean/countryside with her at your side. Basically, it’s a trap.
i taught swimming lessons at a lake in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada. Swimming lessons also teach Water Safety rules that every parent needs to be aware of because even idiots can buy an inflatable backyard pool and can run a tub of water. I Married a man that “Wears water wings in the shower”!

What about “Summoning Rituals”?

Oh,yes! I miss these too!
If only I could summon a Golem or something who kills certain coworkers – or bosses or….

I think we’re straying away from the point. Which is “FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, LEARN TO SWIM!”
Thank you, that is all…
I dunno… potato juggling is pretty useful too. 😉
IT SAVED MY LIFE IN IDAHO.
hahaha
The trick is keeping the eyes on the potatos!
…is that the door over there?
Can I just say, I love the Cthulhu-esque monster with a martini!
Thanks! Tried drawing him with a tentacle wrapped around a beer, but it didn’t read well. Martinis always look like martinis.

I loved the little monster on the couch, just watching TV with a bowl of snacks. It’s me as a monster!
“Three quarters of the earth is covered in water, but swimming lessons are optional.”
Yeah but four quarters of the earth is covered in air and flying lessons are damned near impossible for most people to afford.
And approximately 100% of the universe is empty space, but you just try to find a class on starship piloting.

Wow. I’ve been a pilot for 13 years.
Time flies.

In Iceland we have mandatory swimming lessons through all 10 years of elementary school. So to me it seems really weird that some adults can’t swim.

Someone who hates horizontal water
I don’t see why Martin don’t want to take that swimming lesson, I mean the swimming instructor lady bug looks cute (in Bug standard at least)

Oh, and nearly forgot:
How exactly can you relate to cuteness in bug standards?

I love how he’s trying to shoo away he eldritch horrors with a broom.
What else would he use? He didn’t take banishing classes.
