Smokey and the Fan-Twit

I really gotta stop citing movies from the 70s in my strips. Do young people even know what the hell Smokey and the Bandit is? They probably think Burt Reynolds is some character from Norse Mythology.
Is Mr. Bug drawing bug strips in the first panel? Isn’t that like a perpetuum mobile for fun?
Nah, Burt Reynolds was in Saints Row: The Third so it’s cool
*upvote*
I sing (most of) ‘Eastbound and Down’ everyday – when I leave Holland, Mi and head toward my Grand Rapids stops on my route. Usually, once I get on I-196 and my Rand unit indicates ‘E’.
Nah, he’s Turd Fergusen. They all know him!
I was going to say, my only experience with him is in that SNL Jeopardy skit. XD
There aren’t really any zombie-related facts for this particular comic, so…
uh…
I own a Smokey and the Bandit Hot Wheels car. That’s cool, I guess.
I love seeing “hootenanny” spelled out like that. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it written before. Something about it is just magical.
Hooters and Nanny?
It may be up there in the top 100 prettiest English words, like Ailurophile, Quintessential, Tintinnabulation, diarrhea …..what? …. er yeah … pretty [facepalm]
You whippersnappers! I’m just gobsmacked that hootenanny has come back into our internet funny pages! I know that I’m a day late in my perusings of the “Bug Gin-and-wave-the-Vermouth-bottle-by-the-glass” comic, but I felt the need to inform you that these words are capital!
Sorry, it’s been a couple of days of ‘kids these days’ thoughts and I’m not even old (I’m 37!) But I do love Bug throwin’ a hootenanny. 🙂
I feel the same way about Blue by Eiffle 65. I guess I’m weird, because I’m closer to 60 than I am to 50, but this song just makes me wanna dance!

Gaahhhhhh EARWORM! GET IT OUT! GET IT OUT!
I forced my spawn to watch the original Smokey, Hooper, and my husband threw in the first Cannonball Run movie so at least 3 of today’s generation know Burt, Jerry, (and Dom.) For good measure I occasionally make them watch Jerry Reed, Susanne Plechette, and Dom Delouise in Hot Stuff – a vastly underwatched gem from the 70’s.
Loved Smokey and the Bandit and Cannonball Run growing up. Never saw Hooper though.
Really? Hooper is awesome!
And Burt Reynolds could totally be a Norse Mythology character…
Since there are two coffins, I assume you mean “parents’ funeral,” not “parent’s funeral.” #GrammarNazi
You know, my girlfriend had to explain this grammar rule to me. Yep, you’re right. It should be parents’. Good catch! Will fix!
Yah, What the heck? They went together?
They were likely run off the road by the Bandit’s big rig… or possibly by that crazy Smokey. 🙂
I was literally just thinking of that movie yesterday. I came across a dog named “Bandit” and thought it would be great if the family had another dog or a cat named “Smokey”. That was one of my dad’s favorite movies.
I have argued that listening to “Shake Your Groove Thing” and not shaking your groove thing is a diagnostic criterion for major depression.
My kids just watched that with their dad last month!
I’m of the generation that knows what Smokey and the Bandits is and who Burt Reynolds is. But other than seeing bits and pieces as aired on public TV, I don’t think I’ve ever actually sat through the entire movie. And so I’ve also deprived my kids of the experience.
As an 18 year old millennial, I can confirm that I have not seen smokey and the bandit. I DO know who Burt Reynolds is, however.
I went to Youtube to grab up a trailer to leave here and just spent the last two hours watching other trailers and lost my train of thought.
I had to escape before re-copying a link. 😀
I haven’t seen Smokey and the Bandit, but I’ve heard of it. That counts right?
Oh, GREAT!
Now you’ve got ‘Eastbound and down’ AND C.W McCall’s ‘Convoy’ dueling it out in my head!
GET IT OUT GET IT OUT GET IT OUUUTTTT!!!
Well, Adam, let’s jump forward a couple decades. That is, if you can work “Pocahontas is happy” into the strip, or turn “Amistad” into a verb (“pretend one got it right the first time”), you can break this curse. (“You should have seen Bug at the bar after his set, amistading the rat-cheese joke.”)
