As someone who knows that Star Wars is superior to Star Trek (well, except maybe Episode I), I am able to acknowledge that the original series movies, especially the fourth one, are a lot of fun.
I’ve always been pretty equal when it came to Wars and Trek, and I gotta say, Star Trek IV is probably my favorite piece of the franchise. It hits that perfect blend of comedy and action. It also has my favorite Kirk line: “Double dumbass on you!”
DS9 all the way! I also like Enterprise a little, never got into New Generation that much. I consider movies seperate entity, Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country!
Um, TNG, followed by TOS, DS9, The Animated Series, and Voyager, for televised Trek. Until the new series comes out, that is. Can’t wait until we finally have six televised Star Trek series choose from. Sure would have been interesting if they ever made that prequel series they were talking about all those years ago. What were they going to call it? Enterprise? Darn shame that never got made.
Shut up and let me live in my happy world of hope.
Sure, no doubt that Star Trek in general is far superior to other SciFi franchises. But choosing the Episode I equivalent title as comic title came a bit of a schock.
Dr Who is hands down my go-to for actual science fiction – well outside one or two stories that were – no – don’t go there – ahhhhhhhh.
I always wanted Star Trek after the original series [let the science be science] to follow in its foot steps but each franchise quickly disappointed on the Science end of things. I wish they would go back to having a scientist vet the stories instead of stick-technobable-in-here and totally misuse terms and get the science totally wrong.
But they are great stories you say. And I agree they are great FANTASY stories but there is no science anywhere in those scripts.
At least Star Wars was from the get go science fantasy and totally unabashed about it. It’s downfall with the prequels is that they gave Georgie boy free reign when what was needed was an iron gauntlet crew around him to stop him from going batshite and beat the stupid out of him. Jar Jar was too over the top in I and the mido-whatever was just plain stupid, then killing off what everyone was hoping for in a long running antagonist – argh. I am glad they pulled the franchise out of his hands.
Hey what about Lost in Space or The Starlost as science fiction series?
Eh, I remember watching TOS from my baby playpen when I was 3 or so, so it’ll always be something special, but I love them all, with the caveat I haven’t seen the Jar-Jar Abrams movies.
I’m just as much a Star Wars nut, though.
Heck, I was gagging so hard for sci-fi on TV that I even liked Battlestar Galactica. I need to see the rebooted series. I never watched it because I was sure it was going to get canceled in a week (like Firefly) and I didn’t want to get stuck. Then it was too late and deep into the story to get started.
I’m glad to see the Smithsonian spent the double-extra-special effort (two years!) to restore & preserve the TOS Enterprise prop.
When I was a kid, I used to wish I had that 8 or 9ft long prop almost as much as I wished I was an Apollo astronaut walking on the Moon. I remember seeing a picture of it next to a car and my head exploded. “Can you imagine having a 9ft ENTERPRISE!?!”
I think I would have robbed banks if they’d sold full-size replicas back when I was a kid.
I did however have the 4ft Space:1999 Eagle Transporter model. That was heaven too. Oh and I built ALL the Star Trek AMT models, even the one of Spock fighting the 3-headed snake.
Star Trek after the original series always quickly devolved into science-fantasy because. Why listen to the scientists when we have this way cool idea on how it works in this story. Yeah, I am talking about the 4 or more different ways that a transporter works just to make a weird ass premise for a story.
ST:TNG was and is my favorite of all time. I am pretty equal on Trek v. Wars, all things considered. One thing that always gets me is how hard everyone is/was on the little kid who played Vader in “Episode I” as being a terrible actor. He was 9! (or whatever) Have you SEEN Christian Hayden as Vader in the succeeding movies? He’s just as bad, but no one rags on him! He was Terrible!
All in all though, what I mostly want to say here, dear Adam, is this:
Way cool Enterprise in panel 2. Excellent job!
My favorite lines from the movies:
Spock- “They are not the hell your whales”
Kirk- “Too much LDS”
Scotty- “Captain…there be WHALES here!”
I love Trek in all its forms. The original and TNG are my favorites – but Voyager was great too! (I’ll take 7 of 9 for the win!) I loved the mix of science and comedy and social boundary breaking of the first series. I think the “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield” was one of the best of the originals. I do think TNG writing was superior in many ways. “The Inner Light” episode is one of my very, very favorites. In all of the sci-fi genre, the Borg have to be the best villain of all time. What’s scarier than “being assimilated?”
Oh, and I love Star Wars too… but they are insanely different animals… TV series vs. epic adventure dramas vs. classic action movie based on a tv series.
I’m not a HUGE fan of Star Trek OR Star Wars — I mean, I LIKE them both, but I’m friends with people who ARE actual, genuine fans, and their level of engagement with the works are a totally different thing than I have.
And I’m honestly pretty happy for them. It’s really a good thing to have a thing you truly enjoy, whether that’s opera, or Star Trek, or operas about Star Trek, or bullriding, or bullriding Wampas, or whatever.
TOS was on TV when I got home from school during my formative years. It holds a special place in my heart with 50’s giant rubber monster movies, Battle of the Planets, and StarBlazers.
Not to denigrate my love of the original SW Trilogy – heck I stood in like in the Texas heat for 4 hours to see the first one, but it wasn’t the daily indoctrination I got with Trek. (I do not recognize the other 3 movies that someone made…)
TNG. I like both Star Wars and Star Trek. But seriously, that Trekkie should send you a bag of sand to be course and rough and irritating and get everywhere.
I can’t say I ever really got into either series, but of what little I did experience, TNG was the best for me. Riker had that badass beard, Q was a fantastic mix of fun and menacing, and Picard was… well, he was freaking Picard. Obviously I wasn’t at a point where I could really appreciate all the subtleties, but something about it really grabbed me.

You like the other prequels? I heard they all suck. Never watched Star Trek or Star Wars, I’m a game nerd, not a movie nerd.
Well, then I’d suggest you watch them first before making up your mind.
I’d rank Star Wars V, IV, VII, VI, III, II, I

We have a similar reaction every time we see the Matrix movie on TV: “This was a good movie. It’s a shame they never made any more.”

I (random stranger) agree with this.
also for jar jar binks https://youtu.be/2Z7jq1uCnNU

Fantasy vs. Science Fiction.
Science Fiction wins.

The Inner Light is absolutely my favorite episode of all time!
Ditto!

Star Trek — started watching in 1966 — then Star Wars. But Babylon 5 is on a much higher level than either.
Bab 5 hearkens back to the movie reel days where there was an actual ongoing story from episode to episode and things developed.
TNG. I like both Star Wars and Star Trek. But seriously, that Trekkie should send you a bag of sand to be course and rough and irritating and get everywhere.
Watching TNG at the moment. So far DS9 is my favourite series.
…Not meaning to be a buzzkill… Or end the Trek Vs Wars debate… But didn’t Doctor Who already win like 3 years ago when IT turned 50?
I can’t say I ever really got into either series, but of what little I did experience, TNG was the best for me. Riker had that badass beard, Q was a fantastic mix of fun and menacing, and Picard was… well, he was freaking Picard. TNG is what got me on my nerdy path, then Voyager. I need to get back into DS9.
Babylon 5 all the way, baby. 🙂
LOVED Babylon 5. Very under-appreciated series in my opinion.
Bab 5 and let us not forget Farscape or Firefly.
Space 1999 first season was great, then NY stuck their rancid fingers in and season 2 was rubber monster of the week.
Mind you LEXX was just weird.
Lots of people like both Star Trek and Star Wars…but NOBODY likes them both equally.
