That’s How I Droll
I’ve been catching up on the show Parks & Recreation and a few days ago I noticed that Netflix describes it as a “droll comedy.” After reading that I realized – I wasn’t entirely sure I could define the word “droll.” So, in preparation for this strip, I deliberately did not look it up in the dictionary until I uploaded this strip. Now that it’s up, I’m gonna check it out right now.
Hold on….
Okay, Webster’s American Dictionary (college edition) defines droll as:
“amusing in an odd way; whimsically humorous; waggish.”
Well I certainly came closer to the definition than I thought I would. I figured it would mean something like “intellectual” or “loved by hipsters.” ‘Course, now I have a new word to make up a definition for – waggish! Have any of you ever used the word “waggish” in a sentence? Sounds like someone trying to say “radish” after receiving a double shot of Novocaine.
Droll is a good word. My dad uses it all the time to describe my attempts at humor.
I love this comic.
Then again I love all your comics.
Hilarious. You have a real gift for (ahem) droll witticisms.
drolling on the floor right now
Das ist ja drollig!
Nicht wahr? ^^
Drol(l) in Afrikaans is quite something else…
Is it the “waggish” that has the combination of irony and bemusement I’ve always associated with “droll”?
Also, you need a new word for your definition: “boring and funny at the same time”. Because I don’t think such a word exists, not even in German.
I went through my whole Wortschatz to try and find one. Nope. Maybe a swedish guy could help out?
Why a Swede?
I think “dry wit” comes close, as “dry” can also mean “boring.”
I will pay a lot to see an Amish breakdance competition.
Wow, BugComic hat offenbar viele deutsche Freunde. 🙂
“Churning the Butter” has a totally different meaning than that (at least in certain circumstances). It can lead to blindness.
I think it’s a contraction of “didja roll?”
“D’roll?”
It’s like a Texan trying to explain the difference between “oil” and “all”
“There’s awl that’s in the ground and then there’s awl like you awl.”
Oh, poot. Now I have to wait until Monday for another new Bug.
Sometimes I hear new words I’ve never heard before and just make up a definition which sounds like it is correct. And sometimes I forget to look the word up later and use the word as I defined it. Eventuelly someone will tell me that my sentence made no sense at all and enlightens me. But usually I forget the correct definition anyways and keep using the word wrong.
Also, you need to invent a word for “boring and funny at the same time”, Adam. Bugcomic will change the English language!
I think the REAL question that needs to be addressed here is about doin’ it on cabbage. Green or red? Shredded? Boiled? PICKLED? Is cole slaw a separate fetish?
That’s how I Droll, animal print pants outta control.
ive always thought droll to be like casual funny like u know the person is funny and they get you so theres no big joke just kind of continious funiness like a chill outed funny
I love that you watch Parks and Rec, Ron Swonson is my hero
Waggish is how mildly apathetic dogs feel about chasing balls.
Don’t know if anybody else has said this and I’m too lazy to scroll up and check the other 22 comments because that would be oh so tedious and I’d rather use those 30 seconds to type a random excuse, but If Bugs Bunny tried to say “raddish” it would sound like “waggish”.
Or Elmer J. Fudd, even.
I thought it meant “something the perpetrator thought was funny, but in reality was just stupid.”
The word droll comes the french word ”drôle” which means funny or amusing (or weird).
And no, I’m not a f*****g hipster who speaks french, I am french.
now here’s a dumbass definition!
